Is Booting Up Costing You More Than Just Your Patience?

Give unpaid overtime the bootWhen you are paid by the hour, every minute counts. Each of these minutes becomes even more valuable when you are an hourly paid worker who is entitled to overtime pay for working more than 40 hours in a week, which is required to be paid at a time-and-a-half rate under federal law.

Many hourly employees are required to clock in by uploading a timekeeping program on their computers. Often, these computers are incredibly slow so that by the time the employee sits down, turns on the computer, puts in his or her login credentials, loads the timekeeping program and clocks in, 10 to 15 minutes could go by. This time adds up and can ultimately lead to approximately 50 unpaid hours per year.

Employers are required to pay for this “boot up” time. If you are or were an hourly paid employee and were not compensated for the time spent booting up and logging into your computer to clock in, you may be entitled to unpaid overtime wages.
